After the first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, one of the first events of the spring college season, Baylor has a four-shot lead on Arizona State. Baylor, with a 3-under 281, was the only team to post a sub-par team score at Palos Verdes (Calif.) Golf Club.
The Bears leaned on junior Laura Lonardi and senior Hayley Davis for rounds of 68 and 69, respectively. They were among six players who broke 70 on Sunday. In her first start with the team, first-semester freshman Dylan Kim posted 71. Head coach Jay Goble called Kim’s score, and her spot in the lineup, one of the highlights of a good day.
“The big thing is that our team is pretty underrated,” Goble said. “Rankings don’t tell the true story of how good we are. It was exciting to see the girls play a great round against great teams.”(AP2 714 Fers)
Baylor last won the Dallas Athletic Club Invitational in April 2014, but had a top-3 finish (Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational) in the fall. The Bears are ranked No. 39 by Golfweek.
Arizona State put up a 1-over 285 to fall in behind Baylor. Sophomore Monica Vaughn posted the low score, 69, and freshman Roberta Liti posted 71, which ties her lowest score as a Sun Devil.(matériel de golf a vendre)
Despite playing without its two NCAA champions Doris Chen (2014) and Annie Park (2013), USC is in third. Both players sat out of the tournament with injuries, but first-semester freshman Amy Lee posted 68 to lead the Trojan charge.
Lee and Lonardi are tied for the individual lead with Washington’s Ying Luo and UCLA’s Bronte Law.
Defending national champion Duke is two shots behind USC in fourth, and Florida is another two shots behind that.
